PCOS and Irregular Periods

PCOS is a hormonal disorder that persists mainly among women of reproductive age. Females with PCOS syndrome may face excess male hormone levels along with irregular and prolonged menstrual periods. Here, the ovaries can form several small collections of follicles or fluid. Consequently, the ovaries fail to produce eggs regularly.

Although the specific reason for PCOS isn’t known to date, diagnosis in earlier stages accompanied with weight loss can reduce the dangers of long-term effects like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Periods in PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a health issue that occurs due to an imbalance in reproductive hormones. This hormonal imbalance can give rise to issue inside the ovaries. The ovaries are responsible for eggs that release every month: this process is part of a normal menstrual cycle. However, due to PCOS, the egg isn’t developed or released during the ovulation process. PCOS can give rise to irregular or missed menstrual cycles or periods. Women diagnosed with PCOS syndrome are seen to have lesser periods or miss their periods. They can have less than eight periods in a year. A few women with PCOS can stop having menstruation.

PCOS bleeding

Abnormal uterine bleeding during PCOS occurs from the absence of the ovulation process. Under this PCOS bleeding condition, the endometrium or the uterus’ lining becomes very thick due to excessive estrogen. This condition can’t be corrected by the generation of progesterone every month from the ovary after ovulation.

PCOS menstruation

PCOS is a condition that is common in 12-21% of females of reproductive age. Women diagnosed with PCOS can encounter several health issues, including a high infertility rate. The signs of PCOS menstruation can be attributed to changes in the regular menstrual cycle of a woman. Women who encounter PCOS can stop receiving periods for many consecutive cycles. This condition is termed amenorrhea and is the main cause of infertility. Besides, a few women diagnosed with PCOS can encounter heavy bleeding while their menstruation cycle. This issue can be attributed to menorrhagia. Consequently, it is caused due to reduced levels of progesterone related to PCOS.

This condition of heavy periods or menorrhagia can give rise to serious bleeding that can last for up to seven days or more. The percentage of blood loss in case of a normal period is 30-40ml.

However, women diagnosed with this condition can witness clotting during their menstruation while releasing 80ml or more blood. PCOS can also give rise to painful periods. Heavy periods often go hand-in-hand with painful signs like dysmenorrhea or cramping. Many women use means like intake of medicine or placing a hot water bag to get rid of the pain. However, these menstrual cramps are debilitating for some

Irregular periods

While periods of some females are like clockwork, some females can observe major issues. Although having the odd irregular periods that occurs a bit late is normal, a continuously sporadic menstrual cycle is a PCOS sign. During PCOS, an irregular period cycle is seen as eight or fewer cycles each year.
